BM Half Stat Day:

A.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1201
    Reading:  163
A.M. Blood Pressure:  Forgot to take
A.M. Arterial Temp:  She felt cool; didn't take

P.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  2032
    Reading:  137
Later P.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  7/20/08 - 0049
    Reading:  276

Bowel Movement:  During morning bathing: Very good volume; excellent consistency; very easy elimination; very easy clean-up.
Dinner:That's right, I took her blood glucose just before bed because when I asked her what she wanted for dinner, tonight, she said, "I'd like some of that cherry pie with ice cream, if there's any left." There was. Why not?
Yellow Sputum Report:  I've canceled these reports since last Tuesday, the day the Hospice Nurse assigned to Mom visited, because he said he wasn't concerned about about the type of yellow sputum my mother was expelling. He mentioned, though, that he definitely wants to know about "brown, green or bloody sputum". She continues to spit up yellow sputum and it continues to be accompanied by white or clear sputum. As well, she continues to have all white or clear sputum coughs, as well.
Medication Changes:  I gave her an extra glipizide before bed because of her High Cherry Pie blood glucose. We got in her third breathing treatment with room to spare but I went into automatic when I was preparing it and accidentally gave her the dual treatment instead of the just the Albuterol.

Full Stat Day:

A.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1232
    Reading:  180
A.M. Blood Pressure:
    Time:  1233
    BP:  151/80
    Pulse:  86
A.M. Arterial Temp:
    Time:  1245
    Reading:  99.7

P.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  2012
    Reading:  88

    Medication Changes:
  • Yeeks! You gotta guess that I gave Mom an extra glipizide this morning with breakfast to see if we couldn't work that high blood sugar down. It surprised me because I didn't think we had anything for dinner last night that could account for this. Thus, I think, for awhile, at least, I'll note each night what we had for dinner for my own information. Obviously, what we had last night really shot her blood sugar up.
  • Also, in this category, with the Hospice nurse's concern about Mom's breathing rate in mind, I performed a little experiment during breakfast while she was seated, reading and eating. I observed her breathing rate at 3/lpm continuous flow oxygen and at 4/lpm. Although her breathing rate is still loads faster than mine, it was noticeably less at 4/lpm while sitting. So, I decided to boost her to 4/lpm sitting, 4-5/lpm moving and 4.5/lpm sleeping. The reason I'm not boosting her oxygen up to 5/lpm, yet, is because her nose bleeds easily and quickly when she's at this rate and, I think, the last thing she'd want me to do is bother her all night long in order to re-coat her cannula with KY. You know those razors they sell, now, that have a "moisturinzing strip" just above the blade? Wouldn't it be nice if they produced cannulae with removable nasal tubes and the tubes were produced coated with a KY type of solution that slowly melted and soothed while the person was using the cannula; then, when the nasal tubes were devoid of the gel, you simply replaced the tubes with freshly coated ones?
  • Didn't manage to get in the third breathing treatment, which is all Albuterol. I couldn't convince her to stay up for the complete four hours in order to get it in.
For Dinner:  Home made cheeseburgers consisting of: About 1/3 pound organic hamburger seasoned with Worchestershire Sauce, Herbes de Provence; granulated garlic; dried minced onion; lots of my five blend pepper; served on onion buns with Pepper Jack cheese, dill pickle relish and a thick slice of Bermuda onion; and a side of pickled asparagus spears. It'll be interesting to see what her blood glucose reading is when she awakens.

BM Full Stat Day:

A.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1411
    Reading:  143
A.M. Blood Pressure:
    Time:  1430
    BP:  116/73
    Pulse:  67
A.M. Arterial Temp:
    Time:  1413
    Reading:  99.7

P.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  2041
    Reading:  126

Bowel Movement:  Occurred during "morning" bathing: Good volume; easy elimination; good consistency; easy clean-up.
For Dinner:  Beef Quesedillas consisting of a large flour tortilla, probably a bit less than 1/2 cup grated medium cheddar and jalapeno jack cheese; probably 1/8 cup chopped green onions; probably 1/4 cup ground beef pan fried (and drained) with fresh, chopped poblano and green chilis and 8 oz Herdez Salsa Ranchera; probably 1/8 cup salsa which was a mixture of a Fire Roasted salsa from Costco and Herdez Salsa Ranchera. You wouldn't think there would be a lot of refined carbohydrates in this but, considering her blood sugar next morning, I guess the carbs in the tortilla (which are definitely refined) and the small amounts of sugar in the Salsa Ranchera sent my mother's blood sugar on a fine ride.

Full Stat Day:

A.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  1317
    Reading:  162
A.M. Blood Pressure:
    Time:  1318
    BP:  169/85
    Pulse:  88
A.M. Arterial Temp:

    Time:  2035
    Reading:  99.0

P.M. Blood Glucose:
    Time:  2059
    Reading:  114

Medication Changes:  Gave her 325 mg acetaminophen soon after I took her temperature upon awakening because it was more elevated than usual. This seemed to help bring it down, although slowly. When she awoke from her nap at 2035 I took her arterial temp again, as noted. It had decreased, as noted.
Also gave her a third glipizide with dessert this evening, a brownie with French Vanilla ice cream.

Bowel Movement:  Good volume; good consistency; easy elimination; easy clean-up.
Medication Changes:  Because of her extraordinarily high Blood Glucose this morning (which was probably caused by a combination of the acetaminophen at dinner and the Hoisin gravy on the post roast and vegetables we had for dinner last night) I gave her two glipizides at breakfast. Then, at dinner, since we had pizza, I gave her two glipizides. Managed to get in all three breathing treatments...the Albuterol only treatment coming as the last treatment before bed.

P.M. Blood Glucose: Forgot to take
    Time:
    Reading:

P.M. Arterial Temp:
    Time:  2018
    Reading:  99.5

Yellow Sputum Report:  Threads of yellow sputum mixed with white sputum most of the day, when she coughed stuff up.
Medication Changes:  Once again, managed to administer only two breathing treatments, both with both. I think I'm going to have to change the timing on these: Since she usually stays up a good four hours from the time that she awakens in the morning until before she naps, I can probably get a straight Albuterol treatment in before her nap, then administer the second dual treatment either after dinner or just before bed. I think it's a good idea to stick with the three treatments a day as long as she is doing a lot of coughing. I also took an extra temp reading tonight. It's hard to say whether it indicates that she's running a low grade fever. Before dinner I asked her if she felt sick. She said no. I asked her if she felt as though she had a cold. She said no. I decided, though, it wouldn't hurt to give her a 325 mg acetaminophen tablet with dinner.
